a few days ago, my computer wouldn't turn on. well, technically, it started up just fine but wouldn't load anything. the desktop was empty, the background was gone, and it kept saying smthg about a corrupt local profile, so basically it was the same thing as not turning on. after several restart attempts i started to panic. the D: drive seemed to be intact, but the C: drive definitely was not, and that's where most of my stuff is. pictures... programs... all gone. no, it was not backed up, and yes, i know backing up is recommended.

so we had to do some searching for answers. in the end i had to create 2 additional profiles, and use one of them to transfer everything from 'shirley' to another. and tada!!! it worked. thanks, microsoft faq. i have my stuff back! the only thing is that under 'documents and settings' i am now 'angrybeesh' instead of 'shirley.' i didn't know that the profile name i chose would be permanent, so i used an inside joke as a name, and now it's stuck. :(

after that scare, we are now on the search for an external hard drive. even combined we don't have that much stuff on the computers b/c we mostly use them for email and the like. but we figure, we should store an extra copy of our pictures (and y'know, boring things like work presentations) somewhere just in case.

last saturday afternoon we went out and bought new hybrid bikes. neither of us had ever owned a hybrid bike before, so we were eager to test them out somewhere other than the parking lot of d&d bicycles. the weather has been really gross though: either super hot, or rainy and humid. finally on tuesday we got a sliver of time after work, so we rode for just 20 mins and then jumped in the shower and headed off to a drug rep dinner. :)

the bikes are nice! gopooh likes that we can go pretty fast w/ them. they're not as 'thick' as mountain bikes but they're study enough to go on dirt roads and grass. (yes i said grass. we cut across an empty lot, but no one was paying any attention to us anyway. just don't go tattling on us!) unfortunately the weather since then has been all rain, day in and day out. it really sucks!

smthg is wrong w/ my car tires. this seems to be a recurring problem w/ me and my cars. i don't know what the deal is!

when i was 16 i drove a geo prizm. it gave us a good 9 years, but at the end the tires started to leak air. actually, let me rephrase that. the tires started to deflate. suddenly and rapidly. one day they'd be fine, and the next day i'd have a flat tire.

i remember one day in particular when i was in med school... i drove 20 minutes to this continuity clinic, and when i got out of the car i saw a giant flat. i had to call my dad and have him meet me at the gas station across the street, b/c y'know, i don't know how to change a tire. i was told by the auto ppl that the rims on the car were made of a material that although looked nice and shiny or whatever, tended to dent more readily, thereby leaving the tires more prone to leaks. great. i think i had those rims replaced, but i don't really remember anymore.

i got my current car in 2002 and haven't really had any problems until recently. the recommended tire pressure is 30 psi cold, or otherwise 34 psi. i have to use my portable air compressor about once every 2 weeks! they all leak, but some reason the front left tire is the one that always looks the flattest even if the pressure in that tire isn't necessarily the lowest. tonight they registered 22-25 psi, except the right rear, which was a whopping 18 psi. what the heck is going on?! *sigh*

gopooh and i are planning on going somewhere next march and/or april, partly b/c we want to go somewhere (duh) but also b/c we want to try to take a yearly trip around our anniversary just the two of us. we don't want to spend too much money, but we don't have a set budget. we're willing to spend some dough to have ourselves a good time, and i guess as long as the trip justifies the cost, it's ok.

right now we're thinking of going to the dominican republic. apparently there's a 6-night deal in the middle of march that we could totally use. the problem w/ the dominican is that it'd basically be a beach trip. i'm not sure there's all that much to do there, and we're definitely not ppl who'd be satisfied lounging around the beach all week. like in curacao, we loved being able to drive around and go to all these other sites on our own. plus, curacao was generally safe everywhere, but outside of the touristy areas of the dominican, it might be dangerous.

b/c of that we're also considering going to europe next april, either on top of the dominican republic trip, or in lieu of it. it'd have to be more south, since neither of us wants to be freezing our butts off. maybe south italy? spain?
