i was working on a research project with E, so gopooh was the one who stayed home and handed out halloween candy. this weekend we'd gotten some butterfinger crunch bars, which are these really delicious wafer bars w/ butterfinger filling. or smthg like that. well, guess how many trick-or-treaters he got... NONE!

where did all the kids go? downtown plymouth is a fairly young crowd. there are always a lot of young couples w/ kids and pets running around. i guess i'm not really sure where these other ppl actually live though. for all we know, they could live in plymouth township or maybe even in a neighboring city. plus, when i came home tonight our street looked pretty dark. none of the houses across the street had their porch lights on, and the street light right by our place was out. who the heck would want to trick-or-treat in that kind of environment?

is it bad that i'm glad, b/c now we can eat the candy ourselves? hahaha!

the california fires are crazy! i know that area tends to have these pretty regularly, but still... we found out monday morning that A's parents were safe but were actually evacuated. yikes.

while we were there this past sunday, we celebrated a belated sweetest day w/ dinner at hotel del coronado on coronado island. we went there specifically b/c we'd heard that there was an amazing view of the sunset. so we went... we got our perfect seats on the patio... we had a great romantic dinner... but unfortunately, the sunset was all hazed over b/c of the fires! all we could see was a red sun peeking out from behind haze.

then that night we went up to the bar on top of our hotel to admire the view of the city, and there was a thin film of dust over the table. at the time i thought it was gross that the staff didn't wipe it down! hahaha. but then the next morning the rental car was covered in a similar layer, and i realized that it'd been ashes covering the bar. it seems almost unbelievable that the ashes had already gone so far the first day of the fires.

actually, while our flight was taking off monday, we passed some of the fires as we headed east. so of course we whipped out the camera and took a couple shots. it's pretty freaky, since from where we were up in the air, there was just this green smoke that filled the air! i hope they're able to stop the spread soon...

we got back from a great trip in san diego last night! i'm glad we decided to extend the weekend to make it a longer trip. the weather was just the way i like it -- warm but w/ enough of a breeze.

aside from that, we enjoyed a morning at the san diego zoo. we actually did this behind-the-scenes tour, which basically meant that a tour guide drove us around the 10 acre zoo and let us go 'in the back.' we got right up to a tiger (but it was in its cage) and got to pet and feed a camel. i still think it's cool that the camel came right over when her name was called haha. the cutest thing in the zoo was the pandas though -- they are just so furry and round! this tour thing helped us out a lot, b/c on top of getting to see some of the animals more privately, we saw all 10 acres in 3 hours, so we had more time to explore other areas of the city. :)

we stayed in the gaslamp district, so we basically were walking distance to all the bars and restaurants we wanted at night. from there, we went around coronado island, la jolla cove, and point loma, all of which were fairly easy to get to w/ a car. plus, it was sooo nice to walk along the ocean and watch the lapping waves. i think that's one of my favorite things to do on vacation!

this coming thursday we're going to be going to san diego. a wedding's bringing us out there, but we decided to make it into a mini-vacation, so we're not returning until the following monday. neither of us has been there as an adult, so it should be cool. we like to go places that are new to both of us...

once again, i'm not looking forward to flying. it just makes me sooo sick. i still remember the time i was allowed to sit in the bathroom during the descent b/c they didn't want me to puke all over their seats. as funny as that story is for everyone else, i don't want a repeat of it. when we went to curaçao i used scopolamine patches for both plane rides... and at least i didn't feel like to barf. (i could've used one for when i was snorkeling on an empty stomach though! hahaha.)

C & N were in town for a wedding, so we went out w/ them last night. we didn't do anything huge -- just scarfed down dinner at mongolian bbq then played arcades at gameworks -- but it's always nice to hang out w/ old friends.

it gets harder and harder to keep in touch w/ friends as we get older. i'm afraid that when i'm 50, i won't know anyone i currently know. between jobs, spouses, kids, dogs... whatever it may be... it seems like everyone is always 'tired.' including me. being in michigan makes it convenient to meet up w/ ppl though; since this is where most of my friends' families live, when they're here for weddings, family events, holidays or whatever, it works out great!

speaking of mongolian bbq, though, i used to think that it was a fixed price regardless of what you ate. but i found out last year know that it's a little cheaper if you only eat one bowl. i guess they keep track of how many of your plates they're clearing. so instead of eating a big bowl and then forcing myself to eat another (smaller) bowl like i used to, i can now eat just one GIANT bowl. oh, and maybe even have a small desert like i did last night. :D
